Around 2013, new energy vehicles were widely used in China, and entered the explosive growth stage in 2014. According to the service life of power batteries from 5 to 8 years, the domestic power batteries will enter the peak period of scrapping around 2020.

According to domestic media reports, the head of Changsha transportation group in Hunan Province said that Changsha purchased the first batch of pure electric buses in 2013. The scrapping cycle of these buses is eight years and they will be retired by the end of next year.

The large-scale purchase of pure electric buses started in 2015, and it is expected that there will be large-scale retired batteries in 2023. Power batteries disassembled from retired electric vehicles and buses will enter recycling enterprises for testing and evaluation.

In 2023, there will be a large-scale "decommissioning tide" of power batteries, and recycling will become a top priority

Statistics show that there are 208 power battery recycling related enterprises in China, with 41 enterprises registered in the first seven months of this year.

It is estimated that in 2020, China’s power battery decommissioning will exceed 200000 tons, and the market scale will reach 17.5 billion yuan; by 2030, the market scale will exceed 100 billion yuan.

Lithium iron phosphate and ternary batteries are two main types of batteries used in electric vehicles.

According to professionals, under normal circumstances, when the residual capacity of the power battery of new energy vehicles is reduced to 70% to 80% of the initial capacity, it can not meet the requirements of on-board use.

If the power battery is not properly disposed after retirement, it will affect the environment and bring potential safety problems, and cause serious waste of resources.

The recycling of power battery has been paid attention to for a long time. In recent two years, intensive policies have been issued to further standardize and strengthen the recycling of power battery.

A few days ago, the Ministry of Commerce, the Ministry of industry and information technology and other departments jointly issued the “implementation rules for the management of the recovery of end-of-life motor vehicles”, which will come into force on September 1, 2020.

The detailed rules further stipulate the recycling of power batteries, and require the recycling and dismantling enterprises to dismantle, collect, store, transport and recycle the waste power batteries or other types of energy storage devices of scrapped new energy vehicles, so as to strengthen the safety management of the whole process.
